I couldn’t sleep that night.
I kept thinking about the message from an unknown number.
“They’ll pay for everything.”
At first, I thought it was just a prank. Maybe one of my friends was trying to make me feel better after my husband, Ethan, kicked me out of our home for his younger girlfriend, Chloe.
But deep inside, I had a feeling something was about to happen.
Three days later, Ethan called.
For the first time in weeks, he sounded worried.
“Did you tell my mom what happened?” he asked sharply.
“No,” I replied. “Why?”
He paused for a moment.
“She came to the house.”
I almost laughed. My mother-in-law, Vivian, never liked drama and hardly ever visited without a reason. If she came without telling anyone, it had to be something important.
“What did she say?” I asked.
He stayed quiet.
Then he finally said, “She wants us to leave the house.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
He let out a deep sigh.
“That house… wasn’t really mine.”
I remembered when we bought it. Ethan took care of all the paperwork while I was recovering from surgery. Back then, I trusted him with everything.
That evening, Vivian came to my apartment.
She looked as elegant as always, wearing a cream-colored silk outfit. She looked around my small rented apartment, and her expression became gentle.
“You shouldn’t be the one living here,” she said softly.
I crossed my arms.
“Your son already made that clear.”
She shook her head.
“No. My son made a terrible mistake.”
Then she placed a folder on the table.
Inside were copies of legal papers.
The house had been bought through a family trust that Vivian controlled. Years ago, she had added one important rule: if Ethan cheated during the marriage, he would immediately lose his rights to the house.
I looked at her in surprise.
“You knew he would cheat?”
She lowered her eyes.
“I knew the kind of man my son had become.”
One of the neighbors had recognized Chloe and secretly sent Vivian pictures weeks before Ethan threw me out. As soon as Vivian confirmed the affair, she enforced the rule.
“That text message…” I asked quietly. “Did you send it?”
Vivian smiled gently.
“I wanted you to know that someone was standing by your side.”
A week later, Ethan and Chloe had to leave the house.
But their problems didn’t end there.
Chloe found out Ethan was buried in debt. Ethan realized Chloe had only stayed with him because she believed the house belonged to him.
Within a few days, their relationship fell apart, and everyone saw it happen online.
At the same time, Vivian helped me find a good lawyer.
I received my fair share of our savings, and Ethan was ordered to return everything he had kept from me, including my mother’s treasured family ring.
When he gave the ring back, he couldn’t even look at me.
“I made a mistake,” he said quietly.
I slipped the ring onto my finger and smiled.
“No,” I replied. “You made a choice.”
Then I turned around and walked away, leaving him behind forever.
