In a big, scary apartment building where more than 20,000 people live.

A popular TikTok video showed a huge building in China called the “Dystopian Apartment,” where 30,000 people can live. @fatheristheone shared the video using a drone, pointing out the cool inside, special design, and how big the building is, which amazed people watching.

Many people have either read a book or heard about a Dystopian society, which is a place where life is scary or lacks humanity. Some think of these stories as a warning. In China, there’s now a big apartment building for 30,000 people, with everything they need.

The Dystopian Apartment, called the Regent International apartment, is in Qianjiang Century City, Hangzhou. It was designed by Alicia Loo, who also worked on the Singapore Sands Hotel. Built in 2013, it’s 675 feet tall and has around 20,000 people living in it. The building has a curvy shape and either 36 or 39 floors, depending on the side. It’s one of the most crowded places in the world, with many people living together in one building.

The Regent International building has more than 30 floors and lots of stuff like restaurants, pools, and nail salons. It even has grocery stores and internet cafes. You can find everything you need inside this big “dystopian apartment.”

Some people might worry that residents will never go outside and miss fresh air and sunlight. But it’s essential to know that residents don’t have to stay indoors or live in a “dystopian apartment.” Actually, most residents are young workers, social media influencers, or college students who think living in a curvy building is cheap and easy.

Advantageous living

Living in Regent International is super convenient because you have everything you need in one place. It’s also affordable. You can get different-sized apartments for prices ranging from 1,500 RMB (about $200.00) to 4,000 RMB (just under $600.00) per month.

Some folks are concerned it’s like a “dystopian apartment,” but others love its creative design. It’s even been called “the most eco-friendly building to live in on the planet.”

In the middle of the housing problem in the U.S., there’s a new chance. The concept of a “dystopian apartment” could help make more living areas without using up lots of land. In Alaska’s city of Whittier, they’ve already tried something similar. They have a 14-story building where all 272 people live, like a hotel turned into apartments. This building, like one in China, has lots of things like a church, school, post office, and police station.

But there are also possible problems.

This place has good and bad things. It’s called a “dystopian apartment” for a reason. People wonder how so many can live there. Americans like privacy and space from neighbors. They enjoy yards to relax in or for pets to play. But living here means less personal space and fewer chances to be outside. However, you can walk or rent a bigger unit with balconies for some relief.
