I really tried to think hard about it, but I couldn’t figure it out.

Vacuum cleaners changed a lot in the 1800s. People became more concerned about cleanliness, and technology improved, leading to a big transformation.
Back then, the vacuum cleaner we have now wasn’t invented yet, but there were cool advancements in cleaning tools. Metal vacuum cleaners, though basic compared to today, helped make home cleaning better.
In the 1800s, people really cared about being clean and wanted easy ways to keep their homes tidy. The Industrial Revolution, a time of big tech changes, affected daily life, including chores. Early vacuum-like tools existed, but they were big, not very good, and not as handy as today’s vacuum cleaners, says London’s Science Museum.
Metal got used in early cleaning tools. Those metal vacuum cleaners, like the big canister in the picture, needed people power. You had to pump a handle to make suction and clean floors and carpets. But it was hard work.
In the past, there was a metal vacuum called the ‘Whirlwind,’ patented by Ives W. McGaffey in 1869. It had a hand-crank and used bellows for suction. Even though it was a step forward, it wasn’t as practical as the electric vacuum cleaners we have now.
The metal vacuums from the 1800s show how people back then were really into inventing new things, especially household tools. Even though those early vacuums weren’t perfect, they inspired inventors to keep making better and better ones.
In the late 1800s, things were getting ready for electricity, and in the early 1900s, vacuum cleaners got much better. Electric motors and smarter designs helped Hubert Cecil Booth make the first successful electric vacuum cleaner in 1901.
