Look on Facebook for “exploding oven,” and you’ll see lots of posts with pictures of ovens where the glass doors broke and lots of small pieces of glass on the floor.

But how did this happen?

Willie Mae Truesdale is one of several people who had their ovens ruined.

“We heard this big bang. I was like, what’s that?” Truesdale told ABC11 in February 2023.

She was sitting on her couch when she heard a loud noise from her kitchen. When she checked, she found her oven broken and a mess.

“It was surprising, you had to see it to believe it. It was like, what’s going on? Glass everywhere, all over the floor.”

What was even more surprising was that her Frigidaire oven wasn’t even turned on.

Hey, has anyone experienced their oven door exploding after cooking and turning it off? It’s just a year old, and I hardly ever cook! We were all in different parts of the house when we heard a loud noise like a gunshot, and we found this! It’s only the inside glass that broke, the outer glass on both sides of the door is still okay. The door was shut, nothing fell, and nothing else was disturbed! I turned on the light to take some pictures!

Truesdale isn’t the only one whose oven door unexpectedly broke.

Tonya Lowery turned her oven on to cook dinner when suddenly the door shattered.

Other people also had their oven doors break suddenly, not just Truesdale. When Tonya Lowery turned her oven on to cook dinner, the door suddenly shattered.

Ways to stop your oven door from breaking

Even though lots of glass oven doors break suddenly, there are some tips to reduce the chances of it happening.

  1. Don’t hit your oven door with pots and pans. Even a tiny dent or scratch could make it break later.
  2. Don’t slam your oven door shut.
  3. Push the racks all the way in before closing the door. The metal racks can scratch the glass.
  4. Don’t use the self-cleaning feature. The intense heat it produces can harm the glass inside your oven.

I had no idea oven doors could burst like this out of nowhere! This info is important and should be shared with everyone.
