My mother-in-law tried to mess up our family dinner by telling a lie.

Here’s a simpler version:

From the moment I saw Alex Rodriguez, I knew he was my soulmate. He was the most charming man I’d ever met, and he cared about me just as much as I cared about him. But there was one problem—his mother, Evelyn. She kept trying to destroy what we were building by spreading lies.

The truth is, she was so attached to her son that she felt like I was taking him away from her. On top of that, she didn’t like that Alex fell in love with an Asian woman.

When I met Evelyn for the first time, she immediately brought up Alex’s ex-girlfriend, who was Mexican-American.
“You know, Eva understood our Mexican culture,” she told me after I didn’t show much interest in her tamales recipe.

At first, Alex didn’t think his mom was doing anything wrong. He kept telling me she acted that way because she loved him. He was her only son, and traditions meant a lot to her.

One day, when we met for coffee, she looked at me and said, “You don’t look too bad, but you should wear makeup sometimes. It would make you look prettier.”

Evelyn showed her true colors again on our wedding day, but Alex still couldn’t see what she was really like.

Right before our first dance, she took the moment away from me by stepping onto the dance floor and dancing with Alex while I just stood there, confused. Our guests were just as surprised.

When I finally got pregnant, I hoped Evelyn would accept me at last.

Alex and I told both of our families that we were expecting a baby. My parents were overjoyed and even cried. But Evelyn turned to me and said, “You know, Jessica, my cousin Maria’s son married a Black woman. Their kids are beautiful, but they’ve had a hard time fitting in. Neither side really accepts them.”

Her words hurt me so much that I started crying. For the first time in a long while, Alex stood up for me.

“Mom, you’re going to be a grandmother, and Jessica is the mother of your grandchild. How can you say something like that?”

But Evelyn didn’t care. “Sweetie, I’m just being honest,” she said, sipping her glass of wine.

Baby Isabella Rodriguez-Chen was born on a beautiful spring morning after a hard but thankfully short labor.

When Evelyn saw her granddaughter for the first time, she said, “She definitely has Alex’s nose, but her eyes look… a little different.”

The word “different” made me angry. My daughter’s beautiful almond-shaped eyes showed her Asian roots — but Evelyn treated them like something was wrong.

The next two years were very hard because of my mother-in-law. Her rude comments became too much, and the final breaking point came on Father’s Day, when she told the worst lie yet, trying to destroy our family.

During dinner, Evelyn said she had something to announce.

She stood up, raised her glass, and shouted, “Jessica, you’re a liar. You cheated on my son. This child isn’t my granddaughter, and I have a DNA test to prove it.”

Then she threw some papers on the table, proud of herself. “Zero percent match,” she said with a big smile.

Everyone was shocked, except my mom, who just smiled calmly. Then, in an instant, my mother-in-law went pale when my mom revealed the truth.

“Evelyn, Jessica and Alex already did a DNA test before. They wanted to make sure their daughter wouldn’t be affected by a health condition that runs in your family.”

“What?!” Evelyn said, confused.

“Mom, we know your test is fake. How could you do something like this?” Alex asked, clearly disappointed.

She was caught in her lie — but she didn’t even flinch.
The worst part was that she admitted she faked the test because she wanted Alex and me to break up. She said I wasn’t good enough for him and didn’t deserve to be the mother of his child.

I knew Evelyn didn’t really like me, but I always believed it was just because she loved her son so much. But that day, I finally realized she truly hated me.

That was the last time I ever saw her. Alex has partly forgiven her and still visits her sometimes, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget what she did.
