Finding out you’re going to have triplets would shock any parent. So when 23-year-old Becki-Jo Allen learned from doctors that she had three babies in her belly, she was completely amazed.
After giving birth, she got an even bigger surprise — something no one expected. Her three baby boys turned out to be identical triplets, which is incredibly rare — about one in 200 million!
Becki-Jo and her partner were excited to tell their daughter Indiana that she was about to become a big sister to not one, but three little brothers.
The couple lives just outside Liverpool, England. They had been thinking about having more children but weren’t sure how many — it seems fate made that choice for them.
An ultrasound made everything crystal clear! Early in her pregnancy, Becki-Jo felt very sick and had bad headaches, so doctors scheduled her ultrasound earlier than normal. That’s when they got the shocking news — triplets!
Becki-Jo told reporters, “It was the biggest shock of my life! We don’t have any triplets in the family, so it was completely unexpected.”
The three boys — Rohan, Roman, and Rocco — were born by C-section at 31 weeks, each weighing about 3 pounds 5 ounces. They spent their first six weeks in intensive care until they were strong enough to go home.
Having triplets often comes with many health risks, and it’s rare for all three to survive. That’s why the parents felt so thankful that their boys did so well and gained weight quickly. After just six weeks, they were healthy enough to go home.
At first, doctors said the boys weren’t identical. But visitors kept commenting on how much they looked alike, so Becki-Jo decided to check. She arranged a private DNA test, and the results showed the boys were completely identical!
While triplets are becoming more common with IVF, naturally occurring identical triplets are extremely rare. It happens when one egg splits into two, and then one of those splits again — all within the first ten days of pregnancy. In the U.S. in 2015, only four sets of identical triplets were born.
Roman, Rocco, and Rohan look amazingly alike, but Becki-Jo can tell them apart easily. She says, “They only look the same to me when they’re asleep. They have completely different personalities. They all have dark birthmarks between their eyebrows, but Roman’s is slightly darker, and Rohan has one on his leg as well.”
The three babies use about 130 diapers every week, plus around five packs of wipes — they definitely keep their parents busy!
Six-year-old Indiana is overjoyed to have her special little brothers and is a very proud big sister. Becki-Jo said, “Indiana loves them. She’s not jealous at all. But I do feel a bit sorry for her when I think about what it will be like growing up with three little brothers!”
These boys will surely get a lot of attention for years to come — and they deserve it because they’re so adorable.
