If you’re like me, you’ll be careful around things that fly, make a lot of noise, and can sting.
Don’t misunderstand me, I know bees and wasps are important, but I don’t like them flying around my picnic blanket when I’m trying to eat lunch outside in the sun.
And I’m not the only one who feels that way, which is why I’m surprised by the alarming news about a lot of dangerous bugs coming in. Keep reading if you want to learn more!
In recent years, there have been many reports suggesting that the United States might soon be invaded by the Asian giant hornet, also known as the “murder hornet.”
The scary flying bug was first seen in the US in 2019, and since then, people who usually get scared of regular yellow jackets have been even more afraid because sightings keep happening.
According to reports, the most recent sighting was in Washington in August 2021. The murder hornet can sting as painfully as three to 10 yellow jackets stinging at the same time, so it’s definitely dangerous.
The Asian giant hornet is called that because it’s really good at destroying beehives, sometimes chopping off the heads of thousands of bees while doing it.
Also, murder hornets, as mentioned before, have a really strong sting that can be dangerous for people too. Although it doesn’t happen often, there have been times when a murder hornet sting has killed people.
According to reports, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is taking steps to deal with the danger of these new insects.
After the 2019 event in Washington, bug experts wanted to put markers on caught wasps to follow them to their homes. Then, they could destroy the nests to stop them from spreading more.
