These beautiful promise rings, especially pinky rings, have a special meaning.
You might see women wearing simple rings with a single stone or plain bands on their pinkies. They aren’t a symbol of power or status, as seen in movies, and they’re not for traditional promises between partners. Instead, women—both single and in relationships—are using these rings as a way to make a personal commitment to themselves. This “pinky promise” has long been a playful way to make promises between friends or seal deals, but now, it’s a stylish way for women to symbolize self-love and dedication to their own well-being.
The pinky ring trend was started by Fred + Far, a jewelry brand founded by two women. The idea behind these rings is to celebrate yourself, no matter if you’re single or in a relationship. Although the rings look similar to engagement rings, founder Melody Godfred came up with the idea because she needed a reminder to focus on self-care.
As a busy mom of twins, she realized she was putting herself last. So, along with co-founder Samira Far, she created the ring as a symbol of self-empowerment and commitment to oneself. In an interview with Mental Scoops, Godfred explained her inspiration for the ring.
The ring was designed for the pinky because it’s a finger often overlooked, just like women can sometimes overlook themselves. The creator, Melody Godfred, felt it was empowering to take the idea of a bold engagement ring, which usually symbolizes commitment to someone else, and turn it into a symbol of choosing herself. She explains that wearing this ring doesn’t replace her engagement ring; instead, it complements it. Loving yourself, she says, helps you love others even better.
The ring has a unique design with a downward-pointing white sapphire in the shape of an inverted triangle, symbolizing the strength of feminine energy. While the rings may be pricey for some, many women find that buying one for themselves as a symbol of self-love can be life-changing. They also make thoughtful gifts for special women in your life, like friends, moms, sisters, or daughters.
The pinky ring acts as a daily reminder of self-confidence, reminding you that you’re beautiful, smart, independent, and awesome! The message is about self-love, which isn’t selfish, but a way to appreciate who you are, understand your needs, and set boundaries. It can also be healing, as being rooted in self-love makes your relationships and life more positive.
Interestingly, in Victorian times, women wore pinky rings on their left hand to show they were single but didn’t want to marry. Nowadays, rings are used to express everything from marital status to divorce to purity. For women wearing the new pinky promise rings, the message is clear: “I love myself.” Even if you’re not into the trend, the idea might still resonate with you.
