One day, my husband and I couldn’t pick up our son from school because of work, so we asked Kyle to take the school bus with his classmates. However, things went wrong when the bus driver made a mistake with the bus stop locations. It seemed like a normal Thursday when I said goodbye to Kyle as he went to school with my husband, Tristan. Kyle wasn’t used to riding the bus because either Tristan or I usually picked him up. But since we were both busy with work that day, we informed his teacher that he’d take the bus and we would pick him up at the bus stop, which was closer for us. She helped him understand what to do before getting on the bus.
“Alright, Kyle, the bus driver will announce the names of the bus stops. You need to pay attention and wait for him to call your stop, okay?” Mrs. Patterson told him before he got on the bus. Kyle, being confident and independent, replied, “Thank you, Mrs. Patterson. I’ll be alert and wait for him to call out Pflugerville,” and then hugged her before boarding. He found his seat as the driver closed the door, knowing his stop was farther than the others. So, he started reading a book during the ride.
Kyle knew the name of our neighborhood, but he wasn’t familiar with the bus stop since he’d never taken the bus before. After a few stops, the driver called out “Pflugerville.” Kyle looked around and noticed he was the only one getting off. He thanked the driver and stepped off, finding himself alone at the stop. He called out, “Dad? Mom?” but had no phone, so he sat down, thinking we were just late. As it got darker and colder, Kyle started feeling scared and wandered around, trying to find our house, but soon got lost. While walking, a dark figure suddenly appeared, and Kyle began crying, terrified he was in danger.
That day was chaotic for us. We lost track of time, and Tristan and I rushed to the bus stop in the next town, expecting to see Kyle. But as the kids got off, we realized he wasn’t there. Panic set in when the bus driver, looking pale, approached us. “I’m so sorry, I made a mistake. I called ‘Pflugerville’ too early. I went back to look for him, but…” he trailed off. I was overwhelmed with fear and anger.
While we vowed to take action later, our main focus was finding Kyle. As night fell, Tristan and I desperately searched the area, shouting his name with no response. Tears filled my eyes as horrible thoughts ran through my mind. Suddenly, my phone rang, breaking the silence. “Mom?” Kyle’s voice, a mix of relief and fear, was the best sound I’d ever heard. “Sweetheart, where are you? We’ve been looking for you,” I said, trying to stay calm. He was calling from an unknown number. Whose phone was he using? “I’m with Frank. I’m in a dark, dirty room, but…”
The call suddenly cut off, and my heart sank. Had someone taken Kyle? Who was this Frank? We immediately called the police, and they tracked the call to a rundown part of town. When we arrived at an old shelter, we found Kyle safe but scared, sitting with a homeless man named Frank.
Tristan and I were terrified. Frank looked rough, and we assumed he had kidnapped our son. Tristan almost lashed out at him, but Kyle stopped us. “Dad, Mom, why are you mad at him? You should be thanking him! If it wasn’t for Frank, I’d still be outside, freezing, or worse, someone could’ve taken me.” We quickly realized Frank had protected Kyle when he needed help the most. Feeling ashamed of our initial reaction, we apologized to Frank, but he assured us it was okay.
Kyle then explained how Frank had used his last bit of money to buy him a sandwich and even gave him his blanket to stay warm. I was overwhelmed with emotion, not only from almost losing Kyle but also from the kindness Frank had shown him. That evening, Tristan and I took Frank to a local Chinese restaurant for a nice meal to show our gratitude. Frank was so happy and kept saying we didn’t have to do it, but we knew it was the least we could do. “You saved our son, Frank. We’re incredibly grateful,” Tristan said, pouring him some tea.
We didn’t want to stop at just treating him to dinner. Tristan, who worked at a big pharmaceutical company, pulled some strings and got Frank a job at one of their pharmacy branches. We also made sure he had warm clothes and food while he adjusted to his new life. Frank’s life changed for the better — he was able to move out of the shelter, rent a small apartment, and became a successful security guard. He made new friends and enjoyed his work.
Frank never expected that helping Kyle would change his life, but it did. Looking back, I see how what started as a moment of fear turned into an unexpected friendship and a reminder of the kindness in people. Frank, once a stranger, now holds a special place in our hearts.
