A police officer stops a veteran and asks him to get out of the car after noticing something on the dashboard.

U.S. Army veteran William Jazwinski carries a folded flag in his truck to remember his 15-month time in Iraq. He never thought it would lead to him being pulled over by a police officer.

One day, he saw flashing lights in his rearview mirror. He later shared his unusual experience with the officer on Facebook:

Me – Good morning, officer. Was I speeding?

Officer – Good morning, you weren’t speeding. I just wanted to thank you for your service.

Me – Oh, the bumper sticker! Thank you, sir.

Officer – Where did you serve?

Me – I went to Iraq for 15 months from Ft. Benning.

Officer – My son went to Iraq too, but he didn’t come home.

Me – I’m really sorry to hear that. I just finished a PTSD program.

Officer – I see you have a flag in your truck. We got one for him; it’s at home.

Can I ask you something?

Me – Sure.

Officer – Would you mind stepping out for a hug? You remind me of my son. I pulled you over because I thought you were him. I still can’t believe he’s gone.

“With tears in our eyes, I stepped out and hugged that man,” the veteran remembered. “We cried together for a minute or two. I really needed that. To all families and friends of soldiers, whether they’re still fighting or done, God bless you. It’s tough without them. This journey is hard. Love to everyone.”

Many readers were touched by this story and shared their feelings on William’s Facebook page. One wrote, “What a beautiful story. God bless all our service men and women for their sacrifices.” Another said, “I’m so grateful for your service and the officer’s son. Your sacrifices give us freedom. Thank you, and God bless you all.” A third person praised the officer’s kind act: “God bless the officer who stopped to thank the veteran! That moment changed lives!”
