Actress Anne Whitfield, known for playing Susan Waverly in the popular 1954 movie *White Christmas*, has died at the age of 85 after an unexpected accident during a walk near her home in Washington.
Her family shared the sad news, describing her as a strong person whose positive energy touched many lives.
Whitfield grew up in a creative family, with a mother who taught speech and drama and a father who was a music director, so it was no surprise that she developed a passion for the arts.
By the age of seven, Anne Whitfield was regularly working in radio commercials and shows like Our Miss Brooks and One Man’s Family, building a successful entertainment career that went beyond movies.
Her big break came with her famous role in White Christmas, making her a part of film history.
In the 1950s and ’60s, she continued to succeed in both TV and movies. She appeared in popular TV shows like Father Knows Best, The Donna Reed Show, Rawhide, and Perry Mason, and acted in films such as Juvenile Jungle and Tick, Tick, Tick. She also had a recurring role on Days of Our Lives.
When Anne Whitfield felt she needed a break from acting, she earned a degree in communications and worked for the Washington State Department of Ecology. She became a strong advocate for environmental responsibility, women’s rights, and voter registration.
In her later years, she developed a love for hiking. Even at 85, she celebrated her birthday by hiking in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy. Sadly, she passed away on February 7, 2024.
Whitfield is survived by her three children and seven grandchildren, who remember her as a kind, strong, and generous woman.
“Her family, who meant everything to her, loved her deeply,” her obituary stated. “Anne Langham Whitfield Phillips lived a wonderful life, always using her time to make the world and the people around her better.”
Thanks to the help of caring neighbors with medical expertise, her family had the chance to say goodbye and share their love and gratitude—something they will always treasure.
Fans and fellow actors shared heartfelt tributes and messages on social media in her honor.
Rest in peace, Anne Whitfield.
