At least 15 people sadly died after a bus carrying elderly passengers and a truck collided in Manitoba, Canada. The accident happened near Carberry, west of Winnipeg, on the Trans-Canada Highway. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said that 10 people, including both drivers, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Eyewitness John Proven described the scene as a “huge accident” with one vehicle on fire and the front of the semi-truck badly damaged. The bus was taking seniors from Dauphin to Sand Hills Casino in Carberry when the crash occurred. Emergency services, including an air ambulance and 12 other ambulances, arrived quickly.
Authorities are still trying to figure out why the bus moved into the truck’s lane, but footage shows the truck had the right of way. RCMP Superintendent Rob Lasson said no one is being blamed yet, as the investigation is still happening.
This accident is being compared to the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan, where 16 people died. Because of the similarities, Manitoba officials have asked for help from those who worked on the Humboldt case.
William Doherty, the CEO of the trucking company involved, expressed his deep sadness and promised to fully cooperate with the investigation. He told CTV News that the entire Day & Ross team is thinking of those who lost loved ones in this tragic event. He also said they are hoping for the recovery of the injured and will provide any help they can during the investigation.
Prime Minister Trudeau also shared his condolences, saying, “The news from Carberry, Manitoba is incredibly tragic. My deepest sympathies go to those who lost loved ones, and I’m thinking of the injured. I can’t imagine the pain they’re going through, but Canadians are here to support you.”
The accident has deeply affected the small community of Dauphin, where many of the victims were from. Mayor David Bosiak said, “Everyone in town knew someone on that bus.”
“There’s a shared feeling of shock … it’s a huge tragedy for our small town.”
“It feels like a hard blow.”
We are deeply sorry for this terrible incident and the lives lost.
