Farmers are often worried about rodents and insects harming their crops. They can eat the plants and spread diseases. But in a cannabis field in New Brunswick, Canada, where cannabis growing is allowed, something unusual happened. A mouse was discovered among the plants. It was lying on its back, appearing dazed and unconscious, possibly affected by the cannabis.
Colin Sullivan found a mouse that seemed high on cannabis leaves stacked up. He noticed the rodent stealing leaves from his plants for two days straight. Photos showed the mouse nibbling on its little “harvest” before it got really affected. Eventually, the mouse was found lying knocked out on the pile of leaves. Sullivan put the mouse in a cage to help it recover from the effects until it returned to normal. Six days later, the mouse was released back into the wild.
Sullivan shared this funny experience on Facebook, jokingly suggesting the mouse might be using the leaves to cope with its problems. He updated his followers when the mouse was still in the cage, saying it had a tough time but was recovering well. A few days later, the mouse was released from “rehab”. Sullivan happily announced the mouse’s recovery with some puns: “On The Rodent To Redemption.”
“After a tough battle with addiction, this little mouse has overcome its struggles and is ready to move forward. It’s a reminder that support can clear the haze in anyone’s life. The mouse worked hard and earned its first Twelve Step chip. While I opened its cage, it set itself free. Goodbye, my friend, until we meet again.”
“The Stoner Mouse” Becomes a Hit Online
The initial post got over 461,000 shares. The final update received over 6,400 shares and 1,500 comments filled with appreciative laughs and jokes. People like Cody Myshrall expressed joy over the mouse’s recovery. Rhyll O’Keefe humorously imagined the mouse speaking like a character from a movie. Wendy Chaplin thanked Sullivan for caring for the little stoner.
Sullivan, who has experienced detox himself, also paid tribute to his wife, Robyn Sullivan, whom he credits with supporting his sobriety. Commenters noted they initially came for the mouse story but appreciated the heartfelt message and congratulated Sullivan on his journey to sobriety.
Cannabis Laws in New Brunswick
Cannabis has been legal in Canada since 2018, although different provinces and territories have their own regulations regarding its use.
The New Brunswick government’s official website states: “Through our decisions, actions, and laws, we are creating a culture that is safe, legal, responsible, and restricted to adults. We prioritize educating the public about health and awareness while embracing the economic opportunities of this new industry.”
In New Brunswick, you must be 19 years old to use cannabis, and it can only be bought from licensed stores. Individuals can have up to 30 grams at once. Smoking or consuming cannabis in public or in vehicles is not allowed. Landlords can prohibit tenants from smoking or growing cannabis, but if they allow tobacco smoking, they cannot forbid cannabis smoking.
“It’s crucial for people in New Brunswick to understand the risks so they can make informed choices about using cannabis,” the government concludes.
