Major US Airline Can Now Remove Passengers for ‘Barebeating’

Flying can be tiring and sometimes frustrating, especially when passengers are seated beside someone who talks loudly, plays music, or watches videos without using headphones.

This behavior is called “barebeating.” It happens when passengers play music, videos, or games on their phones or tablets using speakers instead of headphones. This forces other passengers to hear sounds they may not want to listen to.

Because many travelers have complained about this behavior, one major US airline is taking action.

United Airlines Introduces a New Rule

United Airlines has updated its passenger rules to include people who listen to music or watch videos without using headphones.

Under its updated policy, passengers who refuse to use headphones while playing audio or video content may be removed from the aircraft. The airline also has the right to refuse passengers who cause serious disturbances.

This rule is now included alongside other unacceptable behaviors, such as boarding while drunk or interfering with flight attendants.

United Airlines explained that passengers have always been encouraged to use headphones. However, with the expansion of Starlink internet service, which allows travelers to stream videos and other content during flights, the airline decided to make the rule clearer.

The goal is to keep the cabin peaceful and comfortable for everyone.

Passengers Support the New Policy

Many people on social media welcomed the airline’s decision. They believe using headphones in public places is a simple way to show respect for others.

Some passengers said they should not have to remind strangers to lower their volume or use headphones. Others shared that flight attendants often have to deal with these situations during flights.

One flight attendant explained that reminding passengers to use headphones happens almost every flight. This makes their work more difficult because they have to spend time handling noise complaints instead of focusing on passenger service and safety.

Children and Parents Are Also Part of the Problem

The issue does not only involve adults. Some children watch cartoons and videos on their phones or tablets without headphones, while their parents allow them to play the sounds out loud.

Some parents argue that young children cannot be expected to wear headphones. However, other parents shared that even toddlers can use suitable headphones during flights.

Airline employees also explained that some parents believe the rules should not apply to their children. They said everyone, regardless of age, should follow the same guidelines.

Why Is Barebeating Becoming More Common?

Travel experts believe this behavior has become more noticeable because smartphones and tablets are now commonly used for entertainment during flights.

Some passengers use headphones, while others simply play videos or music through their device speakers.

Airplane cabins already have background noise from engines and ventilation systems. Because of this, some passengers turn up the volume on their devices, making the situation even more uncomfortable for others.

This can be frustrating for people who want to sleep, read, or simply relax during their journey.

It can also create additional stress for flight attendants, who must maintain order in a small and crowded space.

Experts explain that constant noise can make it harder for passengers to relax, sleep, and concentrate. This is why airlines encourage everyone to use headphones and respect the comfort of others.

Another Airline Introduces Fines for Bad Passenger Behavior

United Airlines is not the only airline taking action against disruptive passengers.

Recently, Turkish Airlines introduced stricter rules for passengers who refuse to follow proper procedures when leaving an aircraft.

Passengers who stand up before the plane completely stops, open overhead compartments too early, or crowd the aisles before their turn may face official fines.

According to reports, Turkey’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation has instructed airline crews to report passengers who ignore these rules.

Under the regulations, passengers who violate the rules could receive fines of up to 2,603 Turkish Lira, or approximately $67.

The airline reminds passengers to remain seated, keep their seatbelts fastened, and wait until the seatbelt sign is turned off before standing up or opening overhead compartments.

Simple Airline Etiquette Everyone Should Follow

To make air travel more comfortable and safer for everyone, passengers are encouraged to follow these basic rules:

  • Use headphones when listening to music or watching videos.
  • Respect other passengers’ personal space.
  • Avoid placing your feet where they may disturb others.
  • Leave enough space in overhead compartments for other passengers.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol.
  • Stay seated until the aircraft has completely stopped and the seatbelt sign is turned off.
  • Follow the instructions of flight attendants.

At the end of the day, being a good passenger is not just about following airline rules. It is also about showing respect, understanding, and consideration for the people around you.
