His rude joke came back to him like cold water.

She smiled kindly and said, “I thought water would help with your problem too.”

He frowned. “What problem?”

“The extra weight.”

He looked at himself. “I’m not overweight.”

She sat beside him and calmly said, “Exactly. And neither am I.”

The husband started to argue but stopped and stayed quiet.

For a few seconds, the only sound in the room was the TV.

At last, he let out a sigh. “Okay… that was rude. I’m sorry.”

She nodded. “Thank you.”

Trying to make things feel normal again, he took a sip of the water and quietly said, “I still wish this was soda.”

She smiled and answered, “And I still wish you looked like the actor from the movie we watched last night, but we both have to accept reality.”

His eyes grew wide. “Ouch.”

She smiled sweetly. “See? That doesn’t feel good, does it?”

The husband slowly began to laugh. A moment later, she laughed too.

He put his arm around her shoulders. “Peace?”

“Peace,” she said with a smile.

Then she stood up.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“To the kitchen.”

He looked a little worried. “Why?”

She smiled and said, “To get some ice cream… while I’m still beautiful.”
