A strange garage door opener helped me discover how kind he really was.

Losing my husband after many years left a big emptiness in my heart. After a while, I finally felt strong enough to check his things. That’s when I found a garage door opener I didn’t recognize.

It was odd because we didn’t even have a garage. So I wondered who it belonged to.

I walked around the neighborhood and pressed the button as I passed each garage. Suddenly, one of the doors opened.

My heart started beating fast. I didn’t know what I would find, and I couldn’t understand why my husband might have kept something like this a secret from me.

Slowly, I walked toward the garage, and tears began to fall.

Inside, the garage was full of boxes, all neatly labeled — clothes, tools, toys — everything ready to be donated to people who needed help.

I always knew my husband was a kind man who loved helping others, but I never realized he had been doing this so much. He had been giving and donating for years. I even found a small notebook where he wrote the names of people who needed help and the people who donated to make someone’s life a little better.

In the corner of the first page, he wrote, “If something happens to me, I hope someone will continue this.”

Finding that garage felt like finding a part of my husband that I didn’t know about. In that moment, I felt even closer to him.

And yes, I decided to continue his good work after he passed away. Helping the community meant a lot to him, and I didn’t want his kindness to stop just because he was gone.
