Christmas is usually a time of love, giving, and togetherness, but for me, it became the moment I finally understood my relationship.
I had worked many extra hours and saved all my money just to buy my fiancé, Ben, the PlayStation 5 he really wanted.

As a hairstylist still starting out, buying that gift wasn’t easy. But I kept imagining how happy he would be when he opened it, and that thought helped me get through long, tiring days. At least, that’s what I believed.
When it was time to exchange gifts, Ben gave me a small box, smiling like he had something special for me.
But when I opened it, it was just… a bottle of toothpicks. His family burst out laughing, and his sister even recorded it. I felt completely embarrassed.
It hurt even more when I saw the expensive gifts he gave everyone else — diamond earrings for his sister, a car for his brother, and even an apartment for his parents. That’s when I realized it wasn’t a harmless joke. It showed he didn’t respect me at all.
Later, Ben tried to say it was just a funny prank, offering a “real gift” and apologizing. But the hurt was already there. It wasn’t about the money — it was about care, respect, and being treated as a true partner.

That night, I packed my things and went to my mom’s house. Not long after, I ended the engagement. I couldn’t imagine a future with someone who thought embarrassing me was funny.
Then something unexpected happened. Within a few days, Ben had a big problem at work and lost an important opportunity. His family blamed me, even though it wasn’t my fault, but I stood up for myself and told them to leave.
In that moment, I felt a kind of freedom I hadn’t felt in years. That Christmas didn’t take anything from me — it opened my eyes. It reminded me of my value and gave me the courage to choose a future where love and respect are always present.
